Internal Medicine & Women’s Health in Austin, TX
Sonia Durairaj, MD, MSCP is a board-certified internal medicine physician and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner with over 25 years of experience in women’s health. Based in Austin, TX, Dr. Durairaj is deeply committed to a proactive, preventive model of care that helps women navigate midlife and beyond with confidence, clarity, and compassion. Her practice is grounded in evidence-based medicine and guided by a whole-person approach to long-term health and wellness.
Raised just outside of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Durairaj was inspired early on by her parents—her father, a physician, and her mother, a nutritionist and public health advocate. Her calling to medicine solidified during high school when she volunteered in a rural medical and dental clinic in central Mexico through the public health organization Amigos De Las Americas. That formative experience sparked a lifelong passion for healing and service.
Dr. Durairaj earned her B.S. in Neuroscience and Women’s Studies from Oberlin College before attending Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. Early in her career, she practiced as a hospitalist and worked closely with medical students and residents—experience that continues to shape her commitment to education and mentorship. She now serves as affiliate faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.
“Midlife is a pivotal time for women’s health, yet it’s too often overlooked. My goal is to create space for honest conversations, evidence-based solutions, and truly personalized care—so women feel supported, heard, and empowered every step of the way.”
— Dr. Sonia Durairaj, MD, NCMP, MSCP
After relocating to Austin, Dr. Durairaj transitioned to outpatient medicine and began focusing more deeply on midlife women’s health. She witnessed firsthand how many of her female patients struggled with under-addressed symptoms of perimenopause and menopause—and how little formal training most physicians had in managing these transitions. Her mother’s own challenging experience with menopause further inspired Dr. Durairaj to become a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner and an advocate for better care and education in this space.
Today, Dr. Durairaj is recognized for her compassionate, thoughtful approach to care and her commitment to empowering women with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in midlife and beyond. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, playing guitar, and spending time with her husband, two children, and two beloved dogs.
